It’s remarkable how children’s stuff can accumulate! In particular, I find that kids’ art and schoolwork can really take over my home. I remember times when my son was in preschool and he would come home with five paintings in one day—some of which only have one brush stroke—and they were all important to him.  I would then struggle to find the balance between honoring my son’s work and keeping our home as simplified and clutter-free as possible.

 

Below is the process I use to organize my children’s art and schoolwork in three easy steps. Also included are some additional tips for creative ways to display and save your children’s work:

Give yourself, and your children, the gift of a peaceful morning.  At one time or another, we have all experienced the stress of being late in the morning, rushing our children out the door, and occasionally losing our patience. Sometimes it’s hard for both parent and child to go our separate ways feeling good and ready to take on the day after a frantic morning. I know I have had my fair share of chaotic mornings. And over time, I find this can deplete our self-esteem and wear on our relationship with our kids. Following are some tips to help your children start the day empowered by your grace, calm, and patience. I can’t say I follow through with all these tips every day, but when I do, it works!

Get rid of clutter for good by changing the behaviors that create clutter…


Learning how to get rid of and organize our clutter is useful, but clutter is really just a symptom, rather than the root, of the problem. The real issue is how to stop the pattern of accumulating clutter in the first place! As long as we have too many things in our lives we will always be caught up in an endless cycle of organizing our “stuff.”


Dealing with our stuff takes a tremendous amount of time and energy – whether we’re cleaning, repairing, or organizing – taking care of our stuff takes time. Oftentimes, the stuff in our lives keep us from focusing on what really matters, prevents us from enjoying the present moment, and robs us of enough time for the essential, fulfilling things in life like our relationships and experiences.
