My Simple Daily Spiritual Practices

Ideally, we do not need spiritual practices because our life becomes the practice. From my perspective, we already are spiritual. As the University of Santa Monica teaches, “we are divine beings having a human experience,” not the other way around! In this sense, there is nothing we need to do to become more spiritual. In my mind, worshipping in a sanctuary is not necessarily more or less spiritual than drinking a glass of water. The question then becomes, how do we place our attention on our spirituality?  How do we bring our awareness of our spirituality into everyday living?

It’s remarkable how children’s stuff can accumulate! In particular, I find that kids’ art and schoolwork can really take over my home. I remember times when my son was in preschool and he would come home with five paintings in one day—some of which only have one brush stroke—and they were all important to him.  I would then struggle to find the balance between honoring my son’s work and keeping our home as simplified and clutter-free as possible.

Creating a Life Design

affirmations

The first step toward achieving your dreams is to create what we call a “Life Design.” Start by thinking of all the areas in your life such as your career, relationships, finances, health, etc… If you would like, you may use the nine areas referenced in Feng Shui; Career, Helpful People, Children & Creativity, Love & Marriage, Fame & Reputation, Wealth & Prosperity, Family, Health, Knowledge & Self-Cultivation.

The next step is to create a written list of successful outcomes for each area, called affirmations. Affirmations are most effective when written in the present tense. Begin with the words “I am” and finish the sentence with your highest aspirations (see below). The process of writing down your intentions is one of the most effective things you can do to create the life you desire. Writing down your goals sends a powerful message to the universe that is usually answered in extraordinary ways. (more…)
